Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad started off weekend competition with a sweep over Purdue Northwest on the road Saturday (March 27) in Hammond, Ind.
The Bulldogs opened an eight-game league road swing with a 7-1 win over the Pride in game one followed by a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Bulldogs scored once in the second, fourth and fifth innings along with four more in the sixth to beat PNW. FSU held the hosts to only a single run in the bottom of the second and outhit the Pride 7-4 in the win.
Both catcher Brenna George and outfielder Ava Gardner had two hits apiece for FSU in the win. George doubled and drove in three runs while Gardner homered and had an RBI. Second baseman Jadyn Joseph also had a home run and an RBI while shortstop Jayden Marlatt along with designated player Molly Versluis also knocked in runs.
Ferris State's Cecelia Bell claimed the win, hurling all seven innings with seven strikeouts and only one run allowed on four hits with one walk.
In game two, Purdue Northwest tallied 12 hits to eight for FSU, but the Bulldogs earned the comeback victory. PNW scored three runs in the first and took a 5-1 lead into the sixth before the Bulldogs responded with four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Catcher Emily Killion had two hits for the Bulldogs while Joseph drove in three runs and homered in the game. Kennedy Wangler doubled for FSU and had two RBI's while George also drove in a run.
In the circle, the quartet of Sally Leask, Sophia Helm, Addison Gillard and Bell combined to allow five runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Bell claimed the win for her seventh victory of the campaign, tossing one and one-third innings of scoreless action.
The Bulldogs, who are now 18-13 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC, will visit West Michigan rival Grand Valley State on Sunday (March 28) for a league twinbill in Allendale. First pitch for the opener is set for 1 p.m. (ET) with game two slated for a 3 p.m. (ET) start.
