Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad closed out a four-game road trip with a big Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) split on the road at league leader Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday (April 21) afternoon.
FSU fell in game one to the Cardinals by an 8-4 score, but fought back to win game two 3-2 over SVSU in a battle between the league's top two squads.
In the opener, Ferris State gave up four runs in the first inning before battling back to pull within 5-3 after the third inning. However, the Cardinals scored three more times in the sixth and limited FSU to a single ru in its final at-bat in the seventh. SVSU finished with 10 hits and the Bulldogs had nine.
Outfielder Emma Gillard had two hits and drove in two runs for Ferris State while fellow outfielder Ava Gardner produced a pair of hits. Gardner had two doubles and Brenna George finished with one while Gillard recorded a triple. Both Jayden Marlatt and Jadyn Joseph also knocked in runs.
FSU's Cecelia Bell tossed all six innings for the Bulldogs in the circle in suffering the setback, giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits.
Ferris State answered in a big way, though, by taking the nightcap. Both teams finished with six hits and the Bulldogs scored three runs in the first while holding on for the win. SVSU managed to score twice in the fifth before FSU held Saginaw Valley State scoreless in each of its final two trips to the plate.
First baseman Alexis Kozlowski had two hits for FSU while Marlatt also finished with two hits and two RBI's. Both Gillard and third baseman Emma Herremans had a hit. Overall, Gillard also doubled and came up with an RBI.
The Bulldogs' Katie Shuboy claimed her ninth win of the year, allowing no earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts in the triumph.
With the split, the Bulldogs are now 25-18 overall and 11-7 in conference play.
FSU will return home to host Parkside on Saturday (April 25) starting at 1 p.m. (ET) for game one and 3 p.m. (ET) for game two at the FSU Softball Field.
