Bulldog Softball Keeps Rolling With Sunday Home Sweep Over Roosevelt

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team closed out an unbeaten weekend of action with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home sweep over visiting Roosevelt on Sunday (April 26) at the FSU Softball Field.

The Bulldogs took two from the Lakers to move to 29-18 overall and 15-7 in the GLIAC, earning back-to-back weekend sweeps following two wins on Saturday versus Parkside.

In Sunday's action, which represented Military Appreciation Day, the Bulldogs scored an 8-0 shutout win in five innings in the opener and then claimed a 6-1 victory in the finale.

In the first game, the Bulldogs did not give up a hit as pitcher Cecelia Bell went all five innings and did not allow a hit or a run on one strikeout and no walks. She retired all 15 batters she faced.

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start with a two-run homer from first baseman Alexis Kozlowski in the opening inning, scoring three times in the frame. FSU later added a run in the third and two more in both the fourth and fifth frames en route to the win.

Ferris State had nine hits overall in the contest, which included three from Kozlowski. She also drove in three runs and also had a pair of doubles in addition to the home run. Designated player Molly Versluis came up with two hits and three RBI's with a double while four others each had a hit, including outfielder Ava Gardner, catcher Emily Killion, second baseman Jadyn Joseph and third baseman Emma Herremans.

In game two, Ferris State followed up the commanding game one win by claiming a 6-1 decision. FSU totaled eight hits and gave up only five. Both teams scored once in the second, but Ferris State tallied five runs in the fifth to seize control and put the game away.

Right fielder Ella McDonald had two hits and an RBI while Gardner notched two hits and drove in a run as well. Kozlowski added a hit and knocked in a run as did Versluis and catcher Brenna George, who doubled in the game. Joseph also had a hit and Killion accounted for an RBI.

Freshman Katie Shuboy claimed her 11th win overall this year in the circle, tossing all seven innings while giving up a single earned run on five hits. She had five strikeouts and two walks.

The Bulldogs have now won nine of their last 11 games overall this year.

Ferris State will begin a four-game league series against Davenport at home on Friday (May 1) with first pitch set for 1 p.m. (ET) for game one and 3 p.m. (ET) for game two. The Bulldogs then visit DU on Saturday (May 2) before returning home to tentatively close out the regular season with a makeup doubleheader against Purdue Northwest on Sunday (May 3).
