Ferris State Softball Runs Winning Streak To 11-Straight With Two Wins On Final Day Of Regular Season

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad closed out the regular-season in strong fashion on Sunday (May 3), running their winning streak to 11 consecutive games with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home sweep over Purdue Northwest at the FSU Softball Field.

The Bulldogs captured back-to-back wins in the makeup doubleheader between the two squads, taking a 7-6 comeback win in the opener followed by a 10-4 victory in game two.

With the sweep, Ferris State concluded regular-season play with a 35-18 overall record and a 21-7 conference mark, securing second place overall in the league standings. FSU also finished with a 12-2 home mark.

In game one, Purdue Northwest jumped in front quickly with four runs in its first at-bat of the afternoon. However, the Bulldogs tallied three of their own in the bottom of the first inning. PNW took a 6-3 lead into the fifth before the Bulldogs answered with three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth en route to the win. The Pride had 11 hits and FSU finished with eight overall.

First baseman Alexis Kozlowski led FSU with two hits and two RBI's. She doubled in the game as did outfielder Ava Gardner and catcher Brenna George while shortstop Jayden Marlatt had a triple. Garnder, George, second baseman Jadyn Joseph, third baseman Emma Herremans and outfielder Emma Gillard all drove in a run to compliment the two RBI's from Kozlowski.

The trio of Cecelia Bell, Addison Gillard and Katie Shuboy combined to allow four earned runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

Game two started much like game one as the Pride put three runs on the board in the top of the first. Ferris State responded by taking a 4-3 lead after the initial inning. PNW tied the game up in the top of the fourth, but the Bulldogs scored twice each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to close out the sweep. Purdue Northwest finished with nine hits and FSU had eight.

Kozlowski again finished with two hits and two RBI's. She doubled and tripled for the Bulldogs in the victory while Kaelinn Jozsa notched a triple as well. Along with Kozlowski, senior catcher Emily Killion knocked in two runs while Gardner, Jozsa, Abby Meyer and Addison Wangler all produced one RBI.

In the circle, Shuboy garnered her 15th win of the year, throwing all seven innings and giving up three earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Bulldogs will be the number two seed for the upcoming GLIAC Tournament this week at the Crown Point Sportsplex in Hammondt, Ind. FSU will earn a day one bye and open action on Friday, May 8, versus either third-seeded Grand Valley State or sixth-seeded Davenport at 2:30 p.m. (ET). The tourney runs Thursday thru Sunday and is a double-elimination event featuring the league's top six squads.
