Hammond, Ind. - The Ferris State women's basketball squad completed a weekend road sweep with a big 95-70 win over Purdue Northwest in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday (Jan. 18) at John Friend Court in Hammond, Ind.
Ferris State battled thru foul trouble in the opening half and held a 42-36 lead at the break. Junior Mya Hiram had 15 points in the opening half while senior Kenzie Bowers notched 11 for FSU in the first two quarters of action.
The Bulldogs extended the margin to 18 points in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. FSU pushed its six-point halftime lead to 27 points at 71-44 after the third period, outscoring the Pride 29-8 in the third period alone.
FSU played shorthanded as senior forward DeShonna Day did not suit up for the contest due to injury and the Bulldogs had only nine healthy players in uniform.
Ferris State was paced by Emma Schierbeek with a game-high 20 points. Juniors Mia Riley and Mya Hiram both added 19 points each while Kenzie Bowers scored 16 points and Ally Schultz tallied 10 points in the win.
Overall, the Bulldogs shot 51.4% from the floor and finished 13-of-31 (41.9%) at the three-point line along with going a perfect 10-of-10 (100.0%) at the free throw stripe. The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 44-34 and held PNW to only 35.9% shooting overall, which included an eight-of-30 (26.7%) showing from the three-point arc. Both teams had 10 turnovers.
Ferris State outscored the Pride 42-20 inside the paint and 32-10 on the fast break.
The Bulldogs will host Northern Michigan on Thursday (Jan. 23) inside Wink Arena at 5:30 p.m. (ET). FSU then faces Michigan Tech on Saturday (Jan. 25) in Big Rapids starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
