Postgame Highlights & Interview
Big Rapids, Mich. - A slow start proved to be too much to overcome on Thursday (Jan. 23) night as the Ferris State University women's basketball team fell to visiting Northern Michigan by a 78-48 score in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at Jim Wink Arena.
The visiting Wildcats opened up a 13-point lead after the opening period and held FSU to only 14 first-half points in coming away with the triumph. The Wildcats shot 50.9% from the floor and limited FSU to only 32.2% shooting, which included only one-of-13 (7.7%) in the second period alone.
Northern Michigan sank 11-of-25 (44.0%) three's and went 11-of-13 (84.6%) at the free throw stripe in moving to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the setback.
Meanwhile, Ferris State connected on only five-of-26 (19.2%) three's. The Bulldogs were 0-of-12 from the three-point arc in the opening half. FSU made five-of-nine (55.6%) tries at the free throw line.
The Bulldogs were led by junior Mia Riley with 15 points and seven rebounds. She was the lone FSU player to reach double-figure scoring. Junior Mya Hiram added nine points with five boards and four assists while both senior guard Kenzie Bowers and sophomore Claire Erickson finished with six points each.
Northern Michigan had three players reach double-digits as Jacy Weisbrod scored 14 points off the bench while both Abi Fraaza and Alyssa Nimz netted 13 points apiece.
The Wildcats owned a 40-29 rebounding edge overall and also outscored the Bulldogs 18-6 in points off turnovers in the game.
Ferris State fell to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in the GLIAC with the setback.
The Bulldogs will look to get back on track on Saturday (Jan. 25), hosting Michigan Tech in league play at Wink Arena starting at 1 p.m. (ET). It will be kids day and all youth ages 12 and under will get in free at the door.
