Ferris State Notches Big GLIAC Road Win At Michigan Tech To Open UP Trip

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad earned a big Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road win on Thursday (Feb. 13) night, beating Michigan Tech 70-67 at MTU's Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton.

The Bulldogs stayed in second place overall in the league race with the triumph, improving to 17-7 overall and 11-4 in the GLIAC. It marked FSU's second win over the Huskies in as many tries this campaign.

Ferris State jumped in front early and led 22-16 after the opening quarter before MTU answered and outscored FSU 17-9 in the second frame to grab a two-point halftime edge.

In the second half, the Huskies extended the margin to three points entering the fourth period, but the Bulldogs closed right where they started by outscoring Michigan Tech 22-16 over the final quarter for the win.

Four Bulldog starters reached double-figure scoring with junior guard Elle Irwin notching a team-best 18 points in the game. Senior Kenzie Bowers added 14 points while junior Mia Riley notched 12 points and junior Mya Hiram scored 11 points.

Bowers also added eight assists, five boards and two steals for the Bulldogs. In addition, Riley pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in a double-double showing and Hiram registered seven boards for the Bulldogs. Irwin also compiled three steals and blocked two shots.

The Bulldogs shot 40% from the floor and were eight-of-28 (28.6%) from three-point range along with six-of-11 (54.5%) at the free throw line. MTU was limited to 41.9% shooting and finished six-of-18 (33.3%) behind the three-point arc in addition to nine-of-12 (75%) at the line.

Ferris State was outrebounded by a 43-38 count, but Michigan Tech had 16 turnovers compared to only seven for the Bulldogs.

Isabella Lenz totaled a game-high 22 points for the Huskies and Janie Tormanen added 16 points. Kendall Standfest chipped in 13 points.

The Bulldogs will visit Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 15) for a 1 p.m. (ET) league matchup in Marquette.
