Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University women's soccer team capped off Homecoming weekend with a 1-0 win against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Purdue Northwest on Senior Day Sunday (Sept. 21).
The Bulldogs (2-1-3, 2-0-0 GLIAC) wrapped up an impressive weekend in Ferris State Athletics as Bulldog teams combined to go a perfect 5-0 on Homecoming weekend. FSU's soccer squad had two 1-0 victories in league play, the Bulldog volleyball team started GLIAC competition 2-0 and Ferris State football claimed a big 76-0 win over Rio Grande.
Sunday's contest was also Senior Day for the Bulldog soccer team and seven seniors were recognized – Sydney Bourdon, Bella Vallone, Reese Carmody, Haley Buckman, Grace Sampson, Avery Sikorski and Ella Wolf.
Katherine Welch scored the lone goal at 12:29, giving the Bulldogs an early lead for the second consecutive game. Ava Fuller sent a crosser into the box that Welch shot past PNW's goalkeeper, Poppy Jackson, for the goal. It was Welch's second goal of the year and Fuller's first assist.
The Bulldogs held PNW without a shot on goal or corner kick in the first half of play. FSU had one shot on goal and one corner kick.
In the second half, FSU faced seven shots from the Pride, two of which were on target. Korinne Ihrke made both saves and finished off her second consecutive shutout to start 2-0 in GLIAC play.
For the game, Ferris State had three shots on goal, four corner kicks and 15 fouls. PNW had two shots on goal, two corner kicks and 11 fouls.
Individually, Welch, Annie Hartley and Maurine Schneider each had one shot on goal. Vallone, Sikorski, Welch, Lauren McCaul and Isabella Baron played all 90 minutes. Ihrke earned her second career victory.
The Bulldogs will head on the road next weekend for a single match against Roosevelt on Sunday (Sept. 28). Game time is set for 1 p.m. (ET) and live coverage will be provided on FloCollege.
